Student Blog: The times that influenced and occurred before the Renaissance

Enjoyments of the Greek, Roman, Christian, Islamic and Middle Ages:

The Parthenon
Constructed in 447 BC
By Ictinus and Callicrates

My favorite ideas when learning about the examples of religions and empires that occurred before the renaissance was actually the Greek democracy and its architecture.  Because of the architecture style and the way, they made temples Greek architecture is easily recognized around the world and its history is seen in many famous buildings.  The use of the Doric order "The Doric order is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a column that rests directly on the stylobate of the temple without a base." (Becker, 2).  The inception of the Doric order built upon classic Mediterranean design already and in classical Greek fashion made it beautiful when finished and remembered for ages to come.  The complex construction of the Parthenon can also be seen in the following video highlighting the creation behind this famous temple.

New thoughts and understandings of the time before the Renaissance:

In regard to the new things, I primarily learned a great deal about the sudden and swift establishment of the Islamic empire and faith.  One of the many things I didn't know about the empire was that's its swift expansion was in much part its own aggressive expansion by military campaigns.  I also learned that law and religion did not emerge separately from each other but instead coincided together to form its own unique religion within its empire.  outside of its uniqueness as an empire and its swift religious expansion within the world; another key fact I didn't know that stood out to me was one of the primary tenants is that they have to in some point in their lives visit Meccah for religious purposes. To devote one massive journey in your life to one grand location for religious prayers is truly astonishing and unique in that it is required to be done at least once to those who can.

Previous/expanded understanding or knowledge of before the Renaissance:

I have studied much of the Roman and Greek government in due part to my own fascination with government and its roots in the modern world. Most modern governments and other early forms all derive some form of their government from the Roman republic or Greek democracy.  Because of these roots and love for government relearning the philosophical roots of these governments is always enjoyable and great as it adds another layer to my understanding of early government.
